The Chamber and Convention & Visitors Bureau teamed up with the Tri-Cities Road Club for their People’s Community Bank Omnium the weekend of June 5th. The People’s Community Bank Omnium is the culmination of three events that have grown over the years, the Nor-Well Roan Groan Road Race, the Downtown Criterium and the Watauga Orthopaedics Time Trial. An Omnium is a stage race bicycling event (the Tour de France is a stage race of 21 stages) consisting of three different disciplines of bicycle racing; a time trial which is an individual race against the clock, a mountain road race that tests the strength of everyone finishing on Roan Mountain and a closed course criterium that is a high speed lap race in downtown Johnson City. Each rider gains points depending on where they place in each stage and the riders with the most points win the over all prize for their category. Each event also has individual prizes for each race. This year the Downtown Criterium will be the State Championship and the total prize list is over $9000. Each race has Categories for beginners, seniors, accomplished riders and the pro ranks. The People’s Community Bank Omnium is the largest bicycle-racing event in the East Tennessee area with over 622 entrants in the race last year. Only 22% of these riders are local. The governing body of cycling in the U.S., USA Cycling, as well as the Tennessee Bicycle Racing Association sanctions the Omnium. The Tri Cities Road Club one of the oldest clubs in the state organizes the Omnium. For registration contact BikeReg.com and enter People’s Community Bank Omnium.
Throughout the summer months; the City, Chamber and Convention & Visitors Bureau will be hosting teams from across the southeast. First off, we will play host to the USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association) 13 & Under AA Baseball World Series presented by Food City, July 13 – 18. We anticipate over 26 teams with a direct economic impact of nearly one million dollars. Then Labor Day weekend, we will be hosting approximately 40 teams for the men’s’ softball teams in the ASA (Amateur Softball Association) Class E/Rec. Slow-pitch Southern Championships. The tournament will run through September 2nd and we are estimating this event will generate an additional million directly into our community. Please come out and join us at Winged Deer Park.
